Charles todd a duty to the dead6/6/2023 I didn’t think Bess had as much “pluck” as Maise, but as I continued to read, the the mystery & intrigue Bess becomes midst among intensifies and I was drawn right in. In the beginning I fear I compared too much to my beloved Maisie, trying to find flaws in Bess, if you would say. Unable to leave without first solving this mystery, Bess’ will and her previous thoughts of the dashing Arthur will be greatly tested. After meeting the Graham family she quickly discovers that fulfilling Arthur’s promise comes with much apprehension and danger and results in uncovering clues about a murder 14 years prior. Bess is wounded which delays the delivery and the longer it takes to deliver the message the more it starts to take on darker meanings. In, A Duty to the Dead, Bess makes a promise to dying soldier Lieutenant Arthur Graham to deliver a cryptic message to his brother, Jonathon. Now, to stem our grief over the loss of weekly episodes of Downton Abbey, Book Club Girl decided to schedule another read-a-long, this time with Bess Crawford. I first learned of the Maisie Dobbs series from following the Book Club Girl’s site where she did a read-along. Also, after reading the Maisie Dobbs series, finding another WWI nurse turned sleuth was an appealing thought. The Bess Crawford series has been something that I’ve wished to read for quite some time now. “Pirates, prostitutes, smugglers, and business sharks held sway,” he notes. By the time New Amsterdam had been established, more as a business settlement of the West India Company than as a colony, its babel of nationalities were seeking balance between chaos and order, liberty and oppression. Not the least part of that tumult was Dutch political and legal progressivism, “their matter-of-fact acceptance of foreignness, of religious differences, of odd sorts.” Tolerance, in a word, though Shorto ( Saints and Madmen, 1999, etc.) is quick to point out that that meant “putting up with” rather than celebrating diversity. It’s good to remember, the author suggests, that the early 17th century was the age of Shakespeare, Descartes, Vermeer, and Bacon, a time of change and tumult. The all-but-forgotten origins of Manhattan, told with humor and an acute eye for primary sources. Hlomu the Wife by Dudu Busani-Dube6/6/2023 “What reason, Qhawe? Now they keep taking and taking from us. Have they ever done for us? Why did we have to slaughter goats and burn incense for them? Our mother chose Sbopho over us. We were fine not honouring them Qhawe because what ”What is he talking about? “We were roaming around, and I was fine with that, but you decided to bring them into our lives – the ancestors and all that. “Do you remember the life we dreamed of? The things we did, hoping we’d achieve that life? The blood we’ve spilled? The things we have survived? The bodies buried under our Muldersdrift house – everything Qhawe, everything we have ever done and what we did it for, throwing your child in the fire would have given us that. The final instalment of the Hlomu: The Wife series. Join us for the launch of 'The End', where we'll be in discussion with the author Dudu Busani-Dube about their latest work. Mrs claus and the santaland slayings6/5/2023 Then, Giblet himself dies, killed by a black widow spider. There are even snow monsters at the North Pole! But, April Claus doesn’t want to believe her husband killed his older brother in order to become Santa Claus.Īn elf named Giblet Hollyberry comes in second in the ice carving competition, and hints publicly that Nick was responsible for his brother, Chris’, death. Must have been the TV shows I watched as a kid, such as “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”. Claus and the Santaland Slayings about an innkeeper from Oregon who marries Nick Claus, moves to the North Pole, and lives in a community filled with elves, talking reindeer, and snowmen who can move around the community. But, I had no problem at all suspending disbelief to read Liz Ireland’s Mrs. There are tropes in some cozy mysteries that I object to – the romantic triangle that goes on too long the amateur sleuth who ignores her business for the sake of an investigation. I have problems with romances in which there are too many misunderstandings. Upper right - A Day's Work by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Ronald Himler published in 1994. The Triple Agent by Joby Warrick6/5/2023 Although the classified-information obstacles and polished lies of master spies make accurate reporting on such embarrassing fatalities extremely difficult, Warrick demonstrates the initiative that has marked his newspaper career to share details that are mostly attributed and seem credible. Once inside the base, Balawi ignited a bomb strapped to his chest, killing seven CIA personnel. But as the book's title suggests, Humam Khalil al-Balawi, despite supposedly careful vetting by CIA and Pakistani experts, was actually on the side of the anti-American warriors willing to sacrifice their lives in order to kill Westerners. military personnel and Pakistani and Afghani operatives gathered at a well-protected base in Khost, Afghanistan, to meet a Jordanian pediatrician who had seemingly become a valued spy for the Americans inside Muslim terrorist networks. In his debut, Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post intelligence reporter Warrick focuses on Dec. The story of how the Central Intelligence Agency continued its record of failure in the so-called war on terrorism, with fatal consequences. Ugly scott westerfeld6/5/2023 This series was important in my formative years and I hope they can continue to inspire bright young minds for many years to come. I learned to love myself and ignore the ideals of physical beauty that others tried to impose on me. Without this series, I would not be the happy, comfortable free-thinker that I am today. She fights the power and she makes personal sacrifice, all things that we have to learn to do eventually. I found the romantic portions of the series to be appropriate, very different to the awful themes I read in the Twilight series at the same age. She still craves male attention, like we all do from a very young age, but she doesn't require their help to get anything done. Kickass female lead who takes care of herself and takes on the issues of the world, not needing male counterparts to help her. I read this series religiously from when I was 11 and it taught me some very valuable lessons that I might not have learned otherwise. This series is absolutely fabulous! Bright young minds need to learn about vanity, overuse of technology and not giving in to societal expectations in their formative years. |
