The result can be as grating to the reader as listening to an actor using a generic “southern accent” composed of equal parts Dukes of Hazzard and Jimmy Carter. Too many writers attempting regional flavor in their fiction lay it on as thick as a Cajun cook seasoning a pot of jambalaya. I mean she understands deep down how Southern people talk and can replicate the cadence and music of that speech on the page as delicately as a master chef adding a last pinch of sea salt to a batch of Hollandaise sauce. The last black unicorn book6/4/2023 ![]() The twelve chapters are topical, arranged in roughly chronological order. This is the story of Hadish’s life from high school until her more recent Hollywood success. But the last comedy memoir I read from Target was excellent, so I decided to give this one a try. Alas, it’s a comedian’s memoir, not a fantasy novel. ![]() ![]() I’m not very informed on pop culture so the name wasn’t as recognizable to me as it might be for others.Īlthough the cover isn’t particularly fantasy-ish, the unicorn of the title interested me. Why complete a book if I don't like it? Because I need to finish a book I start, always. ![]() The name of the book is "Reunion", but it's not really about the family reunion. Actually very little is about the family reunion party. There was lots of writing leading up to the party, like locating photographs from the deceased mother's home to be made into books for everyone, and all the food preparation for the party. The actual party was a couple of pages of nothing too exciting, except for two little spoiled boys thinking it was a birthday party, and whining because there wasn't a cake with candles to blow out. And wouldn't you know it, turns out someone ended up bringing a cake, so the boys were rewarded in the end. The story was more about, shocking (sarcasm) of finding out a family secret that would had been buried along with their mother had Keira and her husband not decided to go on a trip to Norway, and who then needed her birth certificate to apply for a passport. ![]() An Elegant Defense by Matt Richtel6/3/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It was named one of the best books of 2014 by The Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle, and Amazon, among others.
